Madison County Jail Release Paths
Madison County Jail is the county's adult detention facility. Leaving its booking system does not always mean walking out without further custody. A person may leave after a court-authorized release, after serving a county term, or after another lawful basis ends the jail hold. The jail may also transfer someone to the Illinois Department of Corrections, another county, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration authorities. A transfer closes or changes the Madison County custody episode while the person remains confined elsewhere.
The sheriff's booking and custody-history record is the best local proof of the endpoint. It can identify the discharge time, release authority, or receiving agency when those fields are maintained and releasable. The Madison County Circuit Clerk supplies the court side of the event, such as a dismissal, sentence, pretrial release order, probation order, or mittimus committing a person to IDOC. - Continue with IDOC, BOP, or ICE only when the jail or court indicates that system took custody. A no-result in one unrelated system proves little.

A useful request identifies the person and booking, then asks for booking and release dates, the release type or authority, any receiving agency, and the booking photograph if it is maintained and subject to disclosure.
Illinois FOIA generally calls for a response to a noncommercial request within five business days, with a written five-business-day extension allowed for statutory reasons. That is a response deadline, not a guarantee of immediate production. Madison County Adult Jail Role
The Madison County Sheriff's Office operates the adult jail and manages people confined there, including their delivery to court. The official page provides information on visits, money and property, mail, telephone use, and PREA, but it does not expose person cards, a release filter, booking photographs, a public archive, or a stated retention window. The automated information line reports charges, bond information, and more for a named detainee.
The distinction between adult county detention and state prison matters. A pretrial detainee may have no calculated release date. A person committed to IDOC enters a state sentence-record system, where projected parole and discharge fields may appear. County jail staff cannot turn the IDOC result into proof of the earlier local release time, and IDOC will not hold a record for a county-only stay.

Madison County Jail Oversight Records
Madison County preserves jail-monitoring correspondence in County Board packets. The 2022 filing identifies the Randle Street facility and explains that IDOC conducts annual county-jail monitoring under 730 ILCS 5/3-15-2(b). It also says the inspection report should be available for public review through the sheriff or county clerk. This is useful context when a person needs an official description of the facility rather than a commercial directory entry.
The 2023 IDOC inspection report confirms the facility name and address. Its checklist addresses permanent retention of a signed, itemized property receipt and documentation of medication released with a detainee. Those items are inspection criteria and should not be read as proof of what occurred in a particular release without that person's record.
Oversight documents and individual release records serve different purposes. The first describes operations and compliance. The second documents one custody episode. Ask the county clerk or sheriff for the annual report, and ask the sheriff's records office for the named person's booking and discharge material.
Madison Jail Transfers and Releases
The sheriff's 2019 annual report records 424 IDOC transports and 523 pickups from other agencies or facilities. Those figures show how often custody movement can complicate a roster check. They are not a count of community releases. Treating every transport or pickup as a person set free would create a false local total.
Jail Division deputies also handle court, medical, IDOC, and other custody transports. For a named person, determine which movement occurred. A sheriff custody-history record may name the receiving authority, the court docket may show the legal order, and the next agency's locator may show the continuing custody status.
Note: A Madison County Jail departure can close the county booking while another government agency continues to hold the person.
Madison County Release Pickup Details
The official jail material does not state a standard release hour, a public waiting location, or a routine exit door. Physical processing can continue after a judge signs an order. Property reconciliation, paperwork, another hold, medication documentation, or transport coordination may affect the timing. A family estimate based only on the court docket can therefore be wrong.
Call the inmate-information line before driving to Edwardsville. Ask whether release processing is complete, whether another agency has a hold, and where an authorized pickup may wait without disrupting jail work. Staff may limit details for security or privacy reasons. That limit does not justify inventing logistics from another county's jail page.
